Adaptation strategy to coastal erosion by rural communities: Lessons learned from Ujunggebang village, Indramayu, West Java, Indonesia

Coastal hazard due to wave activity, in the form of coastal erosion, has long been a problem area Ujunggebang. Loss land removed lot rice fields, settlements, and public facilities. Efforts maintain coastline along 3,300 m area, by building defense structures (CDS), have carried out central government since 2006 but, until 2015, CDS that built is still only around 1782 long, some places structure damaged general not enough prevent overtopping. Meanwhile, unprotected segments with experienced significant erosion. The idea use change as an effort adapt hazards, which was conveyed through socialization approach showing examples management practices villagers, gave birth developing tourism village complementary measure for existing structure. Although main faced- erosion- resolved, development recognized local successfully changing life community.
